Of many happy memories of when we were young academics I remember Tony's engaging tastes in music and literature. He was a very keen listener to classical music but wouldn't go to concerts on the ground that distractions in the concert hall and faults in theperformance were put right in recordings. He was also a devoted fan of Agatha Christie and it was a delight when - as a surprise I knew would be welcome - I was able to arrange to sit him next to her at a grand lunch in Oxford.
